Ancient Drama, New Questions
September 15, 2026 · Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University
More than 70 members of Atlanta’s theatre community gathered for the Suzi Bass Salon Holding a Mirror to Classical Theater—an evening that treated ancient drama not as a museum piece, but as a living form that still challenges artists and audiences.
Dr. David van Schoor, assistant professor of Classics at Emory University, and theatre artist Park Krausen led a wide-ranging conversation about the continuing influence of classical theatre. Together, they explored how ancient drama can illuminate enduring questions of power, identity, community, and the stories societies choose to carry forward.
The conversation extended beyond the program itself. Suzi judges, theatre artists, museum friends, and audience members gathered beforehand for a Feast for Dionysus reception—and stayed afterward to continue talking. That exchange between scholarship, performance, and community was exactly what the Salon was designed to create.
